 Waiau means turbulent/racing water and is one of the oldest towns in North Canterbury.
The township is nestled on the banks of the Waiau River, renowned for its superb trout and salmon fishing.
In the heart of the Hurunui District, Waiau is a farming locale known for its Cob Cottage museum, renovated historic hotel and its old stone Anglican Church. The Village Green has a picnic area, playground, Museum (Cob Cottage historical cottage), former Waiau Jail, information board and public toilets.

Waiau is on the Alpine Pacific Touring triangle strategically placed between Kaikoura and Hanmer Springs; it is only 48km from the thermal hot pools and resort town of Hanmer Springs. The closest ski-field is Mt Lyford, 23km north-east of Waiau. Kaikoura, popular for its sea food eateries, whale watching, seals & dolphins is about 1hr drive away.
The Leader Road known for its winding road and scenic views links the coast to country. The vista from the top of 'the hill' taking in the Valley and the township is a picturesque sight that has been captured by many a photographer.
